Popular Biscuit Brand Banned in Anantnag After Failing Food Safety Test
Srinagar, Jan 6: The Food Safety Department Anantnag has prohibited the sale of Cremica Digestive biscuits in the district after a laboratory test declared the product unsafe for human consumption.
According to an official order issued by the Office of the Designated Officer, Food Safety Anantnag, a food sample of Cremica Digestive biscuit was lifted by the Food Safety Officer Larnoo from the local market. The sample pertained to Lot No. BD10K25 and was manufactured and marketed by Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialities Ltd.
The sample was sent for analysis to the National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad. As per the laboratory report dated January 1, 2026, the biscuit was found to be of unsafe quality due to the presence of sulphite content beyond the maximum permissible limit prescribed under food safety standards.
Officials said that consumption of food products containing excess sulphite may pose health risks to consumers. Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the manufacture and sale of unsafe food items is strictly prohibited.
Invoking powers under Section 36(3)(b) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, the Designated Officer Food Safety Anantnag has ordered an immediate ban on the sale of the said biscuit brand within the district until further orders.
The department has warned traders, retailers, and distributors to immediately stop the sale and circulation of the prohibited product, stating that strict action will be taken against violators in the interest of public health.
